Local visibility case study

Building the measurement, then moving the numbers

A full-service litigation firm in India had its local search position effectively unmeasured. We rebuilt the tracking on a fixed keyword set, then used it to direct the work – and local visibility rose in every month measured.

The starting point

Local search position was effectively unmeasured. The firm tracked 117 keywords through occasional ad-hoc scans – no fixed cadence, no practice-area structure, and no way to tell whether a ranking change was real movement or scan noise. Nearly a third of tracked terms returned no local listing for the firm at all, and no baseline existed against which any intervention could be judged.

What we did

We rebuilt the tracker around a fixed 475-keyword set mapped to 37 practice-area sections, running automated scans every two days, with a three-reading minimum before any movement is treated as real. We then used it to direct profile-category changes, service descriptions and page-level fixes.

Where it reached

  • Share of keywords ranking in the local top three: 28.4% to 32.1%
  • Share ranking in the local top ten: 58.2% to 63.1%
  • Overall local visibility: +4.4 percentage points, rising in every month measured

Local visibility rose in each of the four months measured, taking the firm from 276 to 292 keywords ranking in the local top ten, and improving average position when visible from 5.69 to 5.53 – achieved while the tracked keyword set was expanded four-fold to include head terms the firm had never previously ranked for. Four months is a short window and the absolute gains are modest, but the direction is consistent across every metric.

How we measured

  • First-party local rank tracker, 51 scan campaigns across a four-month period (Month 1 to Month 4), roughly 398,000 listing observations.
  • Percentages are computed against every keyword scanned, so a keyword returning no listing counts as not visible rather than being dropped.
  • Measurement covers a single location point in the city; this is a keyword-position study, not a geographic-coverage study.
  • The tracker was rebuilt at the start of the period on a new, larger keyword set, so no comparison is made to the earlier, smaller cohort.
